Description

The Tao Te Ching is one of the most widely read and deeply loved works of ancient spiritual wisdom in the world. But its dense and cryptic lines can sometimes yield more confusion than illumination. If you’ve ever found yourself understanding the printed words but thinking, “Yes, but what does this mean and how is it relevant to me?” then Francis Pring-Mill’s In Harmony with the Tao: A Guided Journey into the Tao Te Ching is your guide into deeper understanding of this classic work of Chinese philosophy.

Today’s fast-paced world leaves us little time to spend with the timeless questions, such as how to live a meaningful life in harmony with the world around us. Nonetheless we yearn for answers ― and answers are to be found in the Tao Te Ching, a book written twenty-five hundred years ago that resonates with people everywhere as though it had been written yesterday. Of the many English translations and versions, some are scholarly, others are philosophical. What’s new in In Harmony with the Tao is the concept of a guided journey accompanying the text of perhaps the best-known English edition: Stephen Mitchell’s elegant, authoritative interpretation Tao Te Ching: A New English Version.

This book, In Harmony with the Tao, includes the complete text of Stephen Mitchell’s work accompanied by Francis Pring-Mill’s illuminating commentaries on each chapter. In a skillful rendition of ancient wisdom reimagined for modern times, In Harmony with the Tao reveals the common threads weaving through the eighty-one brief chapters. In Harmony with the Tao will appeal to anyone keen to understand the ideas contained in, and especially between, the lines of the Tao Te Ching.

The result will appeal to anyone interested in understanding the ideas contained in the Tao Te Ching and in applying them to daily life in the modern world.

Praise for In Harmony with the Tao: A Guided Journey into the Tao Te Ching

"Francis Pring-Mill’s In Harmony with the Tao is an insightful guide to the Tao Te Ching, which has meant so much to so many millions of people across the centuries and across the world. Mr. Pring-Mill’s kind reasonableness may help you navigate through the Tao Te Ching’s apparent obscurities, until you get to the point where you joyfully throw away all guides, and throw away the text itself. " – Stephen Mitchell, author of Tao Te Ching: A New English Version and co-author of Byron Katie's A Thousand Names for Joy, a commentary on the Tao Te Ching

"It is hard to capture the essence of the profound wisdom of this book. Francis Pring-Mill is a thoughtful and gentle guide to the ancient wisdom of the Tao Te Ching. His commentary combines beautiful prose and photography with a clarity that has come from a lifetime of living with this teaching. He invites us to meditate on the path of self-emptying and alignment with the Tao, the center around which all things turn as a path to the abundance and joy we all long for. I highly recommend this book for those who seek a peaceable way within themselves and harmony with others." –Harry O. Maier, Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Studies, Vancouver School of Theology and author of New Testament Christianity in the Roman World

"In Harmony with the Tao is for lovers of the Tao Te Ching. It is obvious that Francis Pring-Mill has long studied the Tao. This book is thoughtful, rich in metaphor and illuminating. Savor this book and be guided into wholeness and oneness." – Rick and Mary NurrieStearns, authors of Yoga for Anxiety, Yoga for Emotional Trauma and Yoga Mind, Peaceful Mind

" Francis Pring-Mill elucidates the ancient Asian wisdom of the Tao Te Ching so simply and clearly, you feel you are having a conversation with a friend. As we journey through tumultuous times, it is good to have a guide who sees the way of the Tao, acknowledges with compassion the difficulties we encounter, and points unswervingly to the deepest truth of existence. Step by delightful step, Dr. Pring-Mill leads us to willingly embrace the mystery of living In Harmony with the Tao." ―Linda Holiday, author of Journey to the Heart of Aikido: The Teachings of Motomichi Anno Sensei
