After tragedy strikes Levi Clayton's family, the youthful coal miner emigrates to New York chasing the dream of building a new life based upon secondhand tales and newspaper reports. When he arrives, Levi quickly discovers that his new home is nothing like what he expected it to be and his gullibility is soon taken advantage of. Injured and without funds, he finds sympathy from a failed doctor, and together, the two embark on a perilous journey west.

In the midst of the murderous ways and the brutal recklessness of life in the west during the American civil war, Levi must learn to harden himself to the cruelty of his surroundings and harness the blazing rage within him caused by the wrongdoings he's subjected to. He falls in with a vagabond band of misfit union soldiers and they find themselves under attack by a Confederate force. With his life on the line, Levi is determined to escape the bloodshed and begin tracking down the Texas gambler who killed his only friend to execute his own retribution.
